Anger Management Techniques

There are many ways to manage anger, but first it is necessary to understand just what anger is. Anger can result from a simple annoyance or can induce fully developed rage. Understanding anger can be a major step in controlling the emotion. If you understand what
anger does to your body, it will help you understand why it is important to choose your battles. When you become angry, your adrenal glands secrete large amounts of adrenaline, which is known as the flight or fight hormone. It prepares you to run faster than you have ever run, or to stand still and fight better than you have ever fought. Your brain shifts from its thinking mode to its survival mode. Your pupils dilate to improve your vision. Your heart starts beating faster and your blood pressure shoots up. This is the toll that anger takes on your health. Are you going to give the power to make you angry to just anybody?

Anger causes both emotional feelings and physiological arousal. The situations or individuals that cause anger cannot be changed, but individual reactions can be modified and/or altered. There are steps one can take to improve destructive anger.

Take a “time-out” or count to ten. This really can cool down anger. Practice relaxation skills to help control a temper-tantrum. Another suggestion is to take a walk or a swim, something physical to deter the anger. Practice deep-breathing, listen to calming music, journal writing or paint a picture; these are all great ways to defuse anger.

When you have calmed your temper, then express your anger so you aren’t left brewing about it. Write down your feelings and rehearse them so you don’t get off track when verbalizing how you feel. Work with the person you are angry with so that you can both identify the anger-causing situation and then work on the solutions and remember, it is important to forgive.

If after conscientiously trying these techniques you find they are not helping, then you may benefit from seeing an anger management professional. Your anger is not only having a negative effect on you, but also on your family, friends, and business associates to name a few, and should be treated quickly so that no one is seriously injured by your anger, including you.  Remember, anger is an emotion. You own your emotions. Your emotions don't own you.  You have the power to use them or hold them under check.  If you let other people make you angry, remember that getting you angry is frequently their main goal.  If you allow others to control your emotions, you
are little more than a puppet on a string, and anyone can make you angry, for however long they
want.  They own you. They can make you miserable for one hour, one day, one month or even
one year.  Seriously, how many people would you want having that much power over your life?
