Treatments for Insomnia

The underlying reason one cannot sleep has to be diagnosed by a health care professional and it could be either a disease or some other condition. A sleep-study would help the doctor to know why you aren't sleeping. Your age may be the cause of your sleeplessness, but that’s not always the only reason. If your biological clock is off, you may be sleeping at odd hours or finding that you are tired in the middle of the day.

There are three patterns for insomnia. Onset is the difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of one’s sleep cycle. Middle-of-the-night insomnia is characterized by problems getting back to sleep after awakening. Terminal, or late, insomnia is early morning waking and difficulty sleeping in. There are many different causes for insomnia, and sometimes they are combinations of several. Many people believe that the older one gets, the more apt they are to become victims of insomnia. This is a common misconception because age doesn’t always mean you require less sleep.

Obviously, we all know about using sleeping pills to aid falling asleep, but that is not a good answer to this situation. Melatonin is an OTC hormone which helps regulate the body’s internal clock. Light determines if melatonin needs to speed up because of darkness or slow down because of daylight. A Sleep in America poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation showed that 58 percent of adults have sleeping problems. The adults who are of the baby boomer generation and older were less likely, 48 percent, to have frequent insomnia. Their sleeplessness was generally associated with medical conditions. Remember
to consider your own body's uniqueness. Sleeping 8 hrs. a night is only a guideline. Some
people might function fine with a lot less.
